
A boy digs through the village dump. He is not looking for treasure. He picks out electronic parts that still have some life left in them. The same hands that repaired radios and returned them to neighbors build a generator to turn the village water pump.
"The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" is a 2019 British biographical film. It is based on the true story of Malawian inventor William Kamkwamba and his memoir of the same name, and actor Chiwetel Ejiofor directed it and appeared as the protagonist's father, Trywell. It screened at the Sundance Film Festival that year and was then released on Netflix.
The story begins with William, a boy from a farming family born in Kasungu, Malawi, and living in the village of Wimbe. He is barred from school because he cannot pay the fees, but he uses the relationship between the science teacher Kachigunda and his sister as leverage to secure classes and library access. What he learns in the library is electrical engineering and energy production. As the drought of the mid-2000s wipes out the crops and the village falls into famine, that knowledge turns from a hobby into a means of survival.
Climate technology today is usually discussed in the language of large-scale capital and policy subsidies. But the starting point this film shows is the opposite. The technology begins from a single condition, that the water pump had stopped and electricity was needed to turn it.
What William builds is a wind turbine. The wind turns the blades, that rotation becomes current, and that current moves the pump. The principle is the same as an offshore wind farm, and what differs is only the scale and the materials. This contrast explains why appropriate technology, that is, solving a problem with the materials and level of technology a region can manage, remains valid.
The direction does not package the boy's invention as a miracle. Ejiofor keeps the camera longer on the drought, the ration riot, and the night the grain store is raided. It is a choice to spend time on the process by which the invention became necessary rather than on the invention scenes, and because of it the windmill becomes a conclusion reached by reasoning without inspiration.
That is also why the scene in which the father destroys the prototype does not read as cruel. The village's only bicycle is the family's last asset, and the proposal to dismantle it is a gamble put to people with no capacity to absorb failure.
There are disappointments as well. The gap between the scenes of reading books in the library and a device that actually works, that is, the stretch of design and trial and error, passes quickly. For viewers curious about how the technology works, this compression is a letdown. It is a story whose engineering texture thinned as the price of choosing the density of family drama.
The film has also been brought to the stage. A musical of the same name created by the Royal Shakespeare Company premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon this past February, and it runs for 12 weeks in London's West End at @sohoplace from April 25 to July 18.
The editing that skips over design and trial and error nags to the end. The more moving the scene of the windmill turning becomes, the clearer it is that the many nights of failure that must have come in between were pushed off screen. The camera that chose the faces of the family could not capture the inside of the machine as well.
Still, what lasts is the feel of a time when electricity was never a convenience of daily life. Why the words about dismantling the bicycle weighed so much, how carefully a patch of field and a single season had to be weighed, comes back every time a switch is flipped. This film quietly proves that invention does not come from inspiration but from problems with a fixed deadline.
