The sky has lost nearly all its color, and the snow runs to the far end of the field. The two large trees standing in the middle do not carry a single leaf, so their twigs look like capillaries drawn against the sky. Only the dry grass poking up above the snow remains brown, marking the height of winter.
Dropping the leaves is a calculated choice. In a season when light is short and water freezes, a tree cuts the cost of keeping its leaves and holds out on what it has stored in its roots and trunk. Inside that gaunt trunk, the carbon pulled from last summer's air has hardened into growth rings.
What we call carbon neutrality comes to resemble this rhythm. Using less, storing what is left in the body, and not missing the time to grow again. The carbon a single tree holds over its lifetime increases simply by letting it stand for a long time on the ground where it took root.
When spring comes, those branch tips will swell earlier than anywhere else. The breadth of the leaves that emerge then is determined by the very form now standing in the snowfield. So what to do when looking at a bare winter tree is to choose watching over cutting.
At the lower left edge of the frame, a single wire fence post leans out of the snow. It is a sign that someone drew a line across the field. The tree knows nothing of that line, but the hand that decides whether to cut or to leave usually moves behind a post like that. Inside the stillness of the winter field, a boundary drawn by people is there as well.
Look at the photograph once more. What the snow covers is the field, and what it does not cover are the branches reaching into the sky.
