The Cheongyang Chilgapsan Jangseung Festival opened on April 11 around the Chilgapsan Jangseung Park. Walking in along the cherry blossom path, visitors are met by jangseung carved from pine, their eyes glaring wide. Rites of village guardian belief such as jangseung carving and the jangseung rite form the backbone of the festival.
The jangseung speaks first through its material. The inner flesh of a debarked log is a damp cream color at first, and after a few years of wind and rain it settles into ash gray. The dull sound of the carver's adze biting into the wood and the smell of pine resin rising from the freshly hollowed grain hang low over the park.
The jangseung rite is the procedure for treating that wood as a god. The old belief of standing them at the village entrance to ward off epidemics and misfortune has entered into the form of a festival, and tension always arises at this point. Preserving the rite requires the time and hands of the villagers, and putting it to use requires cutting it to a length that looks good to spectators.
Between the two, the Chilgapsan Jangseung Festival chose to put the carving process itself on stage. Exhibiting only finished pieces makes it a sculpture park, while showing the carving hands passes the craft on. The few minutes a visitor spends standing before the wood listening to the sound of the adze become a thin channel for that transmission.
Festivals of a different grain follow in the same spring. The Mungyeong Tea Bowl Festival and the Yeosu Turtle Ship Festival both open on May 1. The tradition of potters shaping clay and putting it into the fire and the memory of the sea in the Imjin year form their respective axes.
Placing the three festivals side by side, the terrain of spring regional festivals looks somewhat different. In a season overflowing with events aimed at crowds out to enjoy the cherry blossoms, these put forward human handcraft and village belief. Flowers fall within a week, but the way of carving wood and the way of handling clay remain the following year.
At the foot of Chilgapsan, the cherry blossoms are near their peak by mid-April. The route around the Jangseung Park includes some uphill stretches, so comfortable walking shoes are better. Crowds gather on the opening day, so early hours are quieter.
If a half-carved jangseung stands at one side of the park, it is worth resting your eyes on it for a while. The cut surface of wood stopped at the stage before it becomes a face shows most honestly what this festival is trying to protect. The cherry blossoms fall next week.
