The 2026 Tongyeong International Music Festival has raised its curtain under the theme "Facing the Depths." Twenty-six official concerts take the stage one after another in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province. In a city where the smell of the tide mixes into the cold March air, strings sound inside that dampness.
During the festival, the grain of sound in Tongyeong changes. By day, the scrape of ropes and the cries of gulls come from the wharf, and by evening those sounds turn into the smell of rosin on the bow and the dry resonance of a wooden stage. Audiences take their seats still wearing coats soaked with salt.
The backbone of the program is the twenty-six official concerts. "Facing the Depths," the theme it puts forward, is a standard for choosing works and is closer to a demand made of the audience. It reads as an intention to set aside works forgotten after one hearing and to fill the stage with music that stays long and changes people.
Artistic director Chin Un-suk said that the harder the times, the more one must concentrate on art. At a moment when the economy is difficult and cultural budgets are shrinking, the remark does not sound like easy comfort. It is closer to a statement that confronts head-on the demand to prove art's usefulness.
The program to find young musicians is where that attitude actually moves. Rather than the festival bringing in famous performers to fill one evening and ending there, it is a choice to give the stage and the audience to performers whose names are not known. Such spending is not recovered in that year's attendance figures. The result becomes visible only ten years later.
Another tension comes to the region along with it. The more a single spring festival is consumed as a tourism resource for the port city, the harder it becomes to keep the density of the music itself. What Tongyeong has built up over the years is both the footsteps of tourists and the hours of performance that have continued apart from those footsteps. Holding on to both at once is this festival's task.
The next place to mark on the calendar after Tongyeong in spring is Busan in autumn. The 31st Busan International Film Festival will run for ten days from October 6 to 15, 2026, centered on the Busan Cinema Center, and the organizing committee will release the full lineup of invited works on September 1.
All twenty-six concerts end within the spring. The road to Tongyeong curves along the southern coast, and you pass the sea once before reaching the concert hall. Sitting in the audience with salt still on your fingertips and waiting for the first note, this is the way the festival invites its audience.
