Four hands lie folded on a pale wooden table. The hands coming from the left wear sky-blue shirt cuffs, the hands from the right the sleeves of a thick knit. Light from the window settles gently on the wrinkles on the backs of the hands, the faint spots, the raised tendons. Some quiet hour of the day, probably after a meal has ended and the dishes have been cleared.
Look closely and this overlap is not the shape of one side wrapping around the other in a single direction. There is a hand supporting from below and a hand covering from above, and between them another hand slips in, and they hold one another. Which one is the person giving care and which one is receiving it cannot be sorted out from this single photograph.
When we speak of care we usually imagine one direction. We think the healthy give to the weak, the young give to the old. But the hands of people who have lived together a long time erase that division. When the work of my holding today and your holding tomorrow repeats for decades, hands come to remember each other's shape.
This labor has no work schedule. There is no going home and no shift change, and usually no one counts it. That this brief moment of holding hands on the table may be the only rest in the day, the photograph shows without making a sound.
Look at the photograph again. Each spot on the back of a hand is a mark of a season that has passed, and the gaps between the interlocked fingers are the size of the time still left. The faces of the people sitting at this table are never visible, but from the hands alone we come to know a little of what they have endured.
