Under a sky where gray clouds hang low, three chimneys stand at even intervals. The light is so uniform that even the seams on their surfaces show, and there are almost no shadows. The trees below have grown thick with leaves and half-cover the base of the chimneys, and scaffolding hangs on the building to the right.
No smoke comes from any of the three openings. Whether the equipment has stopped or has briefly lowered its load, the photograph does not say. A chimney is a structure that reveals its purpose only while something is burning.
Even after operation stops, the concrete still stands, and demolition costs money again. The accounting of the energy transition is difficult because, on top of the cost of building anew, it has to calculate how to dispose of what has already been built. The building on the right with the scaffolding does not even tell us whether that disposal is under way.
At the far left of the frame, a single utility pole hangs cut off, and a few wires running from it flow toward the chimneys and disappear outside the frame. Even when the smoke stops, electricity moves somewhere. Equipment that has finished burning and equipment that carries things age on different timelines, and after one side goes quiet the lines on the other side are still taut. What is easy to miss while looking only at the chimneys remains there at the edge.
The gray of the sky and the gray of the chimneys are almost the same tone. The more the boundary between background and structure blurs, the more it falls to the viewer to decide whether to see this scene as a remnant of the past or as a continuing present. Looking at the photograph once more, it becomes visible where each of the three chimney tops is pointing.
