The "2026 Miryang National Heritage Night Tour" will be held for three days from Friday the 24th through Sunday the 26th at Yeongnamnu in Miryang and along the Miryang River. It is a program that stretches the hours of national heritage, which used to close at sundown, into the night. The whole night life of the city rides on a span as short as three days.
Yeongnamnu is a wooden pavilion set on a cliff overlooking the river. Step up onto the floor and the long-trodden wood creaks low underfoot, and the pillars are darkened with the grease of many hands. At night the smell of river water and wet earth rises together from the stream.
Heritage seen at night becomes a different object from what it is by day. When the lighting comes up from below, the shadows made by the rafters and the bracket sets spread wide across the ceiling, and the reds and blues of the dancheong settle deeper than they do in daylight. The field of vision narrows, and in exchange the ears open, so the sound of the river grows markedly louder. When viewing hours run past evening, the time visitors spend in the city grows along with them.
Opening it up and keeping it safe sit on the same scale. A night when crowds gather at a wooden building and the lights go on is a time when fire risk, load, and wear all have to be reckoned at once. That the event is bound to three days is close to a result of that compromise. Between preservation that leaves heritage untouched and preservation that stays alive only when people come and go, neither side can win outright.
Miryang is an old county seat formed around the axis of the river and the pavilion. People gathering to sit by the riverside on a spring night is close to an old habit in this city, and the night tour is an attempt to attach the name of cultural heritage to that habit again. The substance of this program is that local residents come to stand on the same pavilion floor as visitors.

Three days from now in the evening, when the river darkens and the lights come on at the pavilion, the spring night in Miryang crosses briefly into another time. Once the night of the 26th passes, Yeongnamnu goes back to being a daytime building.
