The 31st Busan International Film Festival raises its curtain on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and runs for ten days through Thursday, October 15. The main venue is the Busan Cinema Center. Nine months remain until the opening, and in the meantime there is one more date for audiences to hold on to.
The organizing committee will release the full lineup of invited films on September 1, 2026. Which film screens in which theater, and which days need to be kept free, will be settled only after that day. Until then, the preparation available to audiences amounts to copying the ten-day span and the Busan Cinema Center into a calendar.
The Busan Cinema Center was built of gray concrete and steel. When wind passes under the broad, outstretched roof, the metal rings low, and after rain the smell of wet concrete and iron lingers together. The plastic seat backs in the outdoor seating turn cold soon after the sun goes down.
The festival is also used as a channel through which the city introduces itself. Ten days of screenings pull in commerce, lodging, and transportation as well. The larger that use grows, the more easily the work of protecting the films themselves gets pushed back.
Programming that draws large audiences and the choice to keep films with small audiences on screen to the end compete within the same budget. The view that counts the festival as an industry and the view that seeks to leave the screenings behind as culture collide during the same period every year. This tension is adjusted again every ten days without being resolved.

Busan in October has long days and cool evening air. Even on days without screenings, walking once beneath that building is worth recommending. Standing under the roof and looking up, one gauges with the body the scale of the crowds that will gather here over the ten days.
