The Busan Museum of Art welcomes visitors again on the 17th after about two years of renovation. The construction cost was 46.9 billion won. Four special exhibitions open at the same time to mark the reopening. An exhibition that asks about the future of the museum runs alongside an exhibition that looks back on the memories of liberation and war, and an exhibition where children experience art through their senses while playing also opens, covering a wide range of themes.
With the Busan Museum of Art taking visitors again after two years of closure, residents can now see in its galleries how the museum presents the memories of the city.
About 260 works are on display. Works from major museums and galleries in Korea have been added to the Busan Museum of Art's own collection. Works long kept by artists, their families and private collectors also appear in the galleries.
In addition to the artworks, about 460 archival materials are on view. Together they number more than 700.
The exhibition on liberation and war traces where Busan art began. Records related to art exhibitions held in Busan during the liberation period are also shown. These records are connected to the first generation of Busan artists from that time.
'Future Museology' is the Busan Museum of Art's first international exhibition. It is linked to a consortium formed by nine museums in Korea and abroad. As its title says, it puts forward the future of museology.
To preserve works for a long time, exposure to light, humidity and human touch must be reduced. To show them to the public, the doors must be opened wider. The renovation covered the galleries, the storage vaults and visitor amenities together.
The children's special exhibition 'Secure Base' draws on attachment theory. In attachment theory, a secure base refers to the embrace a child can return to at any time while exploring an unfamiliar world. The exhibition puts play and sensory experience first.
An exhibition on records from the liberation period and an exhibition on the future of the museum are held at the same time in one building.
The reopening comes ahead of Busan's autumn events calendar. The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs for 10 days from October 6 to 15. Its main venue is the Busan Cinema Center. The festival opens three weeks after the museum's reopening.
The Busan Museum of Art is presenting an exhibition on the traces of Busan artists from the liberation period together with the children's special exhibition 'Secure Base'.
