On Friday the 11th of next month, the 2026 Cheongsong White Porcelain Festival opens in Cheongsong-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. At the center of the festival is a ceramics program in which visitors sit beside potters turning their wheels, handle the clay themselves and watch the fire rise in the white porcelain kiln.
White porcelain begins at the fingertips. The lump of clay set on the wheel gives off the raw smell particular to wet earth, and once the shaft starts to turn, a slippery resistance rises under the palm. As the wall of the vessel grows thinner, the sound changes too. The rasp of trimming the foot, the sharp crack of firewood spitting and bursting, the short clear ring that comes back when a cooled piece of porcelain is tapped with a fingernail, all of it is the sensation this festival means to hand to its visitors.
Cheongsong's white porcelain counts 500 years. The line of the Joseon royal kilns reached as far as this mountain village, and potters turned the wheel one generation after another. That line was later cut, and the festival calls the wheel and the kiln back into the middle of the village.
Tension comes attached to the word revival.
A wheel set out for visitors has to take dozens of hands in a single day, and a kiln fired with wood in the old way has to be watched for days on end before the heat spreads evenly. The festival cannot erase the gap between a bowl a visitor shapes in half a day and a technique a potter has spent a lifetime learning. When that gap is shown as it is instead of hidden, the experience gets past souvenir making.
Cheongsong is better known for its apples and its mountains. White porcelain has long been hidden behind that name. Over the three days when villagers stand beside the kiln tending the fire and visitors sit next to them, the craft that was cut off comes back little by little from spectacle toward daily life.
Anyone planning to handle the clay should wear clothes that can get wet and cut their nails short. Cheongsong-gun will announce detailed operating hours and program registration before the opening.
