Gangneung Danoje opens on June 15. For eight days, 72 programs including intangible heritage performances and folk games will continue around the Namdaecheon stream in Gangneung. About two weeks remain until the opening.
The Namdaecheon is a stream where water coming down from Daegwallyeong briefly widens before it drains into the sea. The current makes a shallow sound at about ankle depth, and gray gravel covers the bed. When tents go up on the riverside above it, the festival begins. In mid-June the riverbank smells of grass beginning to dry, mixed with the smell of the water.
The 72 programs are arranged in two broad strands. One is intangible heritage performances, and the other is folk games where many people move their bodies and play together. If performances follow a set order on a stage, the play ground is made as passersby take off their shoes and step in. The eight-day span is a length set so that those two kinds of time can alternate.
Gangneung Danoje is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. What the inscription gave the festival was honor, but it also placed on it the burden of an original form that must be preserved. To say it has continued for a thousand years also means that for a thousand years someone prepared it every year so that it would never be broken off. That preparation has been repeated within the daily lives of the people who live in Gangneung.
When a festival grows, tension arises. The more visitors increase, the more wide stages and facilities are needed, and by that much the quiet time the rites once held is reduced. Leave the original form as it is and fewer people come to watch, trim it to look good and it moves away from the original form. There is no solution that satisfies both demands at once, and there are only the choices that tilt a little to one side each year.
There are things for visitors to keep in mind. The venue is a stream riverside, so the ground is uneven, and when it rains the dirt paths soften quickly. Low-heeled shoes are better, and after sunset the wind off the river is much colder than during the day. Since it runs for all eight days, coming on separate days puts less strain on the body than trying to see everything in one day.
Standing on the Namdaecheon on June 15, you hear the water first. Then the rhythm is laid over it, and the sound of people follows. The word thousand years is barely felt only through sounds mixed together that way. Eight days are short, and the river keeps flowing afterward.
