The Hansan Ramie Festival runs for three days in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province, from June 12 to 14. With Hansan ramie weaving, inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, at its center, clothing made of ramie, food made with ramie, and hands-on programs are gathered in one place. It is the start of the season when ramie has its coolest glow.
Ramie has more sound to it than it appears. While the raw ramie stalk is split, stripped with the teeth and rolled against the knee to be joined, nails and saliva and skin are all called into service, and each time the dry thread brushes past there is a thin rasping sound. Finished ramie is a white with a bluish cast, and once starched it feels cool against the back of the hand. What visitors will see at the festival grounds is the process more than the finished garment.
The program divides into three main strands. There are demonstrations where you watch a weaver's hands up close, hands-on sessions where you try on and touch clothes made of ramie, and food that uses ramie as an ingredient. Clothing and food resemble each other in that they let people experience heritage with the body instead of viewing it through glass.
A symposium on hanbok and life-cycle rites is added alongside. It is a discussion of what people wore as they were born, grew up, married and departed. Among those garments, ramie was a fabric long tied to summer and to funeral rites.
Opening an inscribed heritage as a festival always carries tension. The process of splitting and joining by hand cannot be replaced by machines, so the price is high, the number of people passing it on is falling, and a festival always risks turning that rarity into a brief spectacle. Even so, without showing it, no one comes forward to learn it. The three-day event is closer to an attempt to find a balance in between.
Seocheon is a place where tidal flats and rice paddies sit together, and the ramie plant is a crop that has grown through that land's humid summers. Behind a single bolt of ramie was village-scale labor of planting, cutting, boiling and drying. This is why the festival is an event of the local community.
It is best to check the organizers' notices for the detailed schedule and how the programs are run before setting out. The early summer daytime sun is strong, so bring a hat and water, and for hands-on work with ramie thread dry hands are best.
