In the season when salt carried up from the sea mixes thinly into the evening air, Yeosu is still crowded with boats and people. The 10th Yeosu Music Festival raises its curtain in this port city on August 29. The opening stage brings the KBS Symphony Orchestra conducted by Chung Myung-whun, with pianist Sunwoo Yekwon appearing as soloist.
It is a festival that has reached ten editions.
A conductor, an orchestra and a guest pianist make a combination that works anywhere. What changes in Yeosu is the setting in which that sound is placed. The water striking the breakwater, the harbor lights that stay on all night, and the damp wind at the tail end of summer all move along outside the seats.
Yeosu has long been called a city of industry and tourism. The stacks of the refinery complex and the gondolas of the cable car hang under the same sky, and passenger ships come and go between them. Planting a classical music festival in a place like this would not have been a natural choice at the start. The fact that it has continued for ten years speaks instead of the process by which that awkwardness has gradually been erased.
For a regional festival to survive long, it has to bring big names in from outside and at the same time build up something within the city that will remain after those names leave. The former sells tickets and the latter buys time. A festival in its tenth year is about ready to be asked for a report card on the latter. A festival where half the seats are filled by people from elsewhere and a festival where locals drop by on an evening walk will have entirely different faces ten years on.
The name Chung Myung-whun by itself moves classical audiences in Korea. The same goes for Sunwoo Yekwon. That a stage bringing the two performers together is being held on the shore of the South Sea reads as an attempt to prove that performances of the same density are possible outside Seoul.
Nearly two months remain until the opening.
Detailed programs and ticketing schedules will be announced in stages through the festival's organizing committee. Yeosu in late August crosses between late-summer humidity and early-autumn chill within a single day, so anyone going to an evening concert had better bring a jacket.
