Okcheon County in North Chungcheong Province holds the Hyangsu Okcheon Corn and Potato Festival over two days, Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th. Built around corn and potatoes just taken from the midsummer fields, the festival rests on two pillars, harvest experiences and direct sales from local farms.
Mid-July is the brief stretch when these two crops come into season together. Potatoes turn soft in the field if the monsoon rains drag on, and corn's sweetness shifts toward starch within days after the kernels fill out. That is why the festival dates fall around this time.
Visitors can go into the fields themselves and gather corn and potatoes in the harvest experience program.
Anyone who has dug potatoes knows it. The rasping sound as the hoe breaks the soil, the round feel catching at the fingertips, the damp, raw smell of earth clinging to the tubers that come up. Corn is different. Peeling it strips away several layers of pale green leaves, beneath which yellow kernels sit in even rows, and silk like raw thread tangles around the hands.
Direct sales from local farms open alongside. Because the method cuts out distribution steps and sells straight from the field, the people who harvested and the people buying settle price and quality face to face.
Local festivals built around seasonal produce usually waver between two directions. Helping farm households requires large crowds, and large crowds press down on the fields. Once the rows set aside for visitor experiences split off from the rows actually shipped to market, the festival drifts away from farming. Okcheon County has run the harvest and the direct sales together in one place.
Okcheon has long been field-crop country. On terrain shaped by the water of the upper Geum River and the sloped fields between mountain skirts, dry fields rather than paddies supported household livelihoods, and summer corn and potatoes stood at the center of that living.
Details on programs and how to take part are available through Okcheon County. Potatoes fresh from the soil have skin thin enough to peel with a fingernail, and that condition is gone after a day. The event runs two days, and the season for digging potatoes and picking corn does not carry past this month. For anyone with a mind to stand in a field, this weekend is the time.
