The 31st Busan International Film Festival opens on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and fills ten days through Thursday, October 15. The main venue is the Busan Cinema Center (영화의전당).
What audiences will see becomes clear as summer ends. The organizing committee will release the full lineup of invited films on September 1. From that day, audiences begin building their own ten-day schedules by hand. For those who map out their routes in advance, the first day of September becomes the festival's real starting point.
The metal roof of the Busan Cinema Center takes in light through the day and warms to a lukewarm temperature, and by evening the air beneath it cools. Step into a screening hall and the dry smell of thick fabric seats and the low hum of machinery fill the senses. When the lights go down and the screen lights up, that noise goes unheard.
A thirty-first edition means the city has repeated the same thing every autumn. A theater is a place that keeps film and files, and at the same time a place that uses them up. Keeping is quiet and screening is loud. For ten days the festival ties two things of different natures into one building.

Over those ten days the city's rhythm changes as well. In the gaps between screenings, audiences step outside the theater and walk unfamiliar alleys, then sit down in a nearby restaurant and go back over the scenes they have just watched. While the festival borrows the city for a while, the city borrows the time of the people who have come.
Ticket prices and booking methods will be announced later. What a June audience can decide now is which of the ten days to be in Busan. Since the opening falls on a Tuesday and the closing on a Thursday, the question is whether a weekday can be cleared.
Once the list of invited films is released on September 1, screening schedules can be checked. Until then, what audiences can decide is which day in early October to keep open.
