Semiwon in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, holds its Lotus Festival in July. The event presents traditional arts including gugak performances and tea ceremony together in a water garden where lotuses bloom and fade. Rather than putting up a separate stage, the paths between the water-filled ponds serve as the viewing route themselves.
Lotus flowers open when the sun hangs low and slowly close as the light rises. The garden's day therefore wears entirely different faces in the morning and at midday. Lotus leaves far larger than a palm do not let water soak into their surface, so dew gathered overnight rolls about on top of the leaves.
During the festival, gugak performances continue at this waterside. The sounds of the gayageum and daegeum scatter easily in a place without walls, but they also spread far, lying low over the water's surface. In the tea ceremony program, visitors watch the flowers close while holding a hot teacup in their hands.
The lotus, which roots in mud and opens a clear flower, was long a subject of painting and writing, and has been grown again and again in gardens and temple ponds. The old notion of washing the mind while looking at water was added to this as well. In Yangpyeong, which sits along the river, tending a pond is landscaping and also a technique for handling water.
A garden is easily damaged as more people enter it. Along a pond's edge, where rhizomes spread shallowly, footsteps that crowd together pack the soil and block the water channels. Restraint on the order of staying on the viewing path and not touching the flower stalks is what keeps this garden until the next summer.
The detailed schedule and fees will be arranged before the opening. Those planning a visit are better off choosing an early hour over the middle of the day, when the sun is strongest. The flowers stay open longer then, and the heat at the waterside has not yet risen as much.
The July pond does not look the same every day. A flower that opened wide yesterday drops its petals today, and beside it another stalk pushes up through the water. Semiwon is a little over an hour from Seoul by car.
