The domestic camping market has surpassed 10 trillion won. With over 7 million people enjoying camping, it has become a national leisure activity, and travel using camper vans and caravans is emerging as a new trend.
According to a survey by the Korea Tourism Organization, camper vans, caravans, and trailers account for 16.3% of preferred accommodation types while camping, showing a significant share next to regular tents. The 2025 Camping Industry Trend Seminar forecasts that the use of camper vans will expand further with the increase of senior campers. The ability to enjoy nature comfortably without the burden of setting up and taking down tents is attracting the choice of middle-aged individuals aged 50 and above.
The biggest advantage of camper van travel is that the boundary between movement and accommodation disappears. You can arrive at your desired location and relax immediately without any additional preparation, allowing for a flexible itinerary that is not bound by a schedule. For family travelers, it provides a way to secure a safe accommodation environment while increasing time spent with children.
Spending time in nature also impacts psychological recovery. A study on Shinrin-yoku in Japan showed that just walking in the forest for 15 minutes can reduce cortisol levels, a stress hormone, by 15-20%. There are also research findings that indicate that spending just 10 minutes in a natural environment improves mental well-being indicators among college students. Camper vans play a practical role in increasing this time spent in nature. They reduce the energy spent on setting up tents, allowing that time to be replaced with walks in the woods or relaxation by the water.
According to a paper published in the Journal of Tourism Promotion Research, camping activities were analyzed to have a positive impact on reducing psychological stress. Psychologists explain that activities like camping, which allow for independent achievement, help in healing wounds and emotional recovery. Camper van travel adds the element of comfort to this. Sleeping in a space equipped with familiar bedding and personal items, and experiencing the natural light coming through the window in the morning, acts as a way to relieve the tension of daily life.
Domestic campers go camping an average of 5.5 times a year, with an average expenditure of 465,000 won per trip. If the cost of purchasing a camper van is burdensome, there are rental services available. The demand for rentals is steadily increasing in the global recreational vehicle market, and various camper van rental companies are operating domestically.
There is also a clear trend of preferring camping sites near urban areas. The ability to encounter nature without traveling far and the convenience of switching between daily life and relaxation within a short time are attractive to office workers. Camper vans prove useful even for these short trips. It becomes realistically possible to leave on Friday evening, wake up in nature on Saturday morning, and return home on Sunday afternoon.
As interest in the environment increases, discussions about sustainable camping culture are also active. Camper van manufacturers are working to improve fuel efficiency and develop electric camper vans. In 2023, Winnebago announced the development of a fully electric zero-emission recreational vehicle. Along with the culture of leaving no trash after camping, the eco-friendliness of the means of transportation itself is emerging as a future challenge.
Spending a night in a camper van is different from a hotel room. You can see the stars through the window, and the sound of birds at dawn replaces the alarm. This simple experience allows you to reconnect with the rhythm of nature that you have distanced yourself from in urban life. A moving tiny house is becoming a tool to slow down the pace of life.
